What Makes KSM-66® Ashwagandha Different

Not all Ashwagandha is the same. Here's why the KSM-66® branded extract is one of the most researched, and what to look for on a supplement label.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the oldest herbs in Ayurvedic tradition, used for centuries to support resilience and recovery. In the last decade it has become one of the most popular adaptogens in Western wellness — but not all Ashwagandha is the same.

When you compare supplement labels, you'll see everything from "Ashwagandha root powder" to specific branded extracts. The difference matters more than most people realise.

What KSM-66® actually is

KSM-66® is a full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract developed by Ixoreal Biomed in India. It is made using a green-chemistry extraction that uses no synthetic solvents or alcohol — only water and milk. The result is a concentrated extract that preserves the natural balance of the original root.

Two things set KSM-66® apart from generic Ashwagandha: it is standardised to at least 5% withanolides (the active compounds), and it is one of the most clinically studied Ashwagandha extracts on the market, with over 50 published human studies.

How to read an Ashwagandha label

If a label just says "Ashwagandha 500mg" without further detail, you don't actually know what you're getting. Look for three things:

1. The extract ratio (e.g. 10:1 or higher) — this tells you how concentrated the extract is relative to the raw root.

2. Standardised withanolide content — this is the measure of the active compounds.

3. A branded extract name — KSM-66® and Sensoril® are the two with the most published research. Generic extracts are not necessarily bad, but they have less data behind them.

Our VitaEdge Ashwagandha is KSM-66® at 500mg per capsule, equivalent to 6250mg of raw Ashwagandha root, with standardised withanolides of 25mg per serving.

A note on expectations

Ashwagandha is not a stimulant or a quick fix. It is an adaptogen — meaning its effects are usually felt over weeks of consistent daily use, not within hours. As with any food supplement, consistency and patience matter more than chasing immediate sensations.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you take medication or are under medical supervision, always consult your healthcare practitioner before adding any supplement to your routine.
